I don't think cough needs an ANTIBIOTIC. But it depends on the symptoms and the duration of the cough. The following causes, alone or in combination, are responsible for the chronic cough.

SYMPTOMS
A chronic cough may occur with other sign and symptoms, which may include:
1-A runny or stuffed nose
2-A feeling of liquid running down back of your throat (post nasal drip)
3-Frequent throat clearing and sore throat.
4-Hoarseness
5-Wheezing and shortness of breath
6-Heartburn or sour taste in your mouth
7-In rare cases coughing up blood.

-Aspiration (food in adults, foreign body in children)
-Bronchiectasis (damaged, dilated Airways)
-Bronchiolitis (inflammation of very small airways of lungs)
-Cystic fibrosis
-Laryngopharyngeal reflux (acid reflux)
-Lung cancer
-Non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (airway inflammation)
-Sarcoidosis (collection of inflammatory cells in different parts of the body)
-Ideopathic pulmonary fibrosis( chronic scarring of the lung)

The test have an importance, according to the history of illness and Diagnosis
DRUGS
Antihistamines, corticosteroids and decongestants.
For Asthmatic attacks inhalers
Antibiotics, if bacterial, fungal or mycobacterial infection is causing chronic cough.
Acid blockers for acid reflux.
Cough suppressants for dry, productive, allergic or chesty cough
Life style and home remedies.
Drink plenty of water, orange juice, consider honey, moisturise air. Avoid tobacco.
